John Kalama III hit a hole-in-one at Big Island Country Club on June 9.
He used a 9-iron on the 144-yard 17th hole from the red tee. Fred Spender, Maurice Kahawii and Butch Rubenstein witnessed the shot.
Leeward Steelers registration June 29
The Leeward Steelers Pop Warner football team will hold its registration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 29 and July 13 behind Kekuaokalani Gym. Children ages 7-15 are invited to register. For more information, call 960-7219.
Hard Naks
workouts July 1-5
Hard Naks will host a high-performance speed camp July 1-5 at Konawaena High School. The camp is open to boys and girls.
Hard Naks coaches will be teaching linear and lateral speed, proper technique in combine tests (shuttle, L-drill, 40-yard dash), sports specific weight training, and sports specific stretches to improve athleticism and speed.
Elementary and intermediate students will work out from 8 to 10:30 a.m., and high school athletes will work out from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The early registration fee is $50 by June 28. The fee after June 28 is $75.

Kealakehe football workouts ongoing
The Kealakehe football team’s Prepare to Succeed summer workouts are taking place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from to 3 to 6 p.m. through July 26 at the school’s baseball field.
Students must have completed Department of Education physical examination and parent consent forms on file with the school in order to participate.
Forms are available at Kealakehe’s attendance and main offices.
Workouts also require students wearing cleats for outdoor activities and gym shoes for the weight room.

Applications are being accepted for the girls volleyball coaching position at Honokaa High and Intermediate School.

Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp in July
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars are sponsoring the inaugural Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp for boys and girls ages 9 to 17 set for July 31 through Aug. 3.
Named in honor of the former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the various camps and clinics around the Big Island, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will take place at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and other Hilo gyms.
Instruction and drills will be conducted throughout the day, and games will be played at night.
Players may register by July 15 for $60.
Late enrollment is $70. All enrollees will receive a camp shirt and a group photo.
Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and a UH-Hilo Hall of Fame member, is the lead clinician.
Various guest clinicians will be announced at a later date. Parks Director Clayton Honma will serve as the camp director.
Registration forms are available during normal business hours at the Parks and Recreation office located in Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Luau Hale at 799 Piilani Street in Hilo.
Make checks payable to the Big Island All-Stars and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”

Cycling club announces summer events
On July 13, Hawaii Cycling Club will host its first Mauna Loa Training Time Trial.
This 17.5-mile trial with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet will start at the bottom of Mauna Loa Observatory Road and go up to the Mauna Loa Observatory parking lot.
The event starts at 8 a.m. with registration from 7 to 7:40 a.m. followed by a pre-race meeting at 7:50 a.m.
The HCC and the Queen Kaahumanu Tri Club also hold the First Tuesday Training Time Trials.
The dates for these training time trials this summer are July 2, Aug. 6 and Sept. 3. The 5.1-mile course runs from Kaiminani Drive north to the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
The start time is 7 a.m.

Hapuna Roughwater Swim set for June 29
The Hapuna Roughwater Swim, the second leg of Bike Works Beach & Sports’ triple crown of swimming, will take place at 8 a.m. June 29 at Hapuna Beach State Park.
Register by Saturday to guarantee a race T-shirt.

King’s Swim
July 6 at Kailua Bay
Kona Aquatics will host its 19th annual King’s Swim at 8 a.m. July 6 at Kailua Bay.
The 1.2-mile course begins at Kailua Bay and ends at Kamakahonu Bay, directly in front of King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
Event organizers will not allow fins or wetsuits. Applications are available at Bike Works (74-5583 Luhia St.) in Kailua-Kona. A non-refundable entry fee of $15 must accompany the application.
The Registration deadline is June 29, and late registration takes place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Kailua Pier on race day.
The late registration fee is $20.
Awards go to the top three male and female finishers and to winners in each of the event’s 14 age groups. Volunteers with kayaks or surfboards wishing to join the safety patrol for the swim are welcome to participate.

Mauna Kea
pro-am July 1-5
Mauna Kea Golf Course will host its 40th annual pro-am tournament July 1-5. The total purse for pro golfers is $10,000.
Entries are limited to the first 26 paid teams by Saturday.
Tournament entry fees are $8,700 per team of four or $2,900 per amateur.
Entry fees include dinner functions (spouses included), amenity tournament gifts and prizes, and green and cart fees for two practice and three tournament rounds.
Practice rounds will take place July 1 and 2, and tournament play will begin July 3.

HIBT fishes
for volunteers
The Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is looking for more than 50 volunteers to help with the running of the 54th annual tournament.
A variety of tournament support is needed, including Kailua Pier operations, the HIBT retail store and administration.
Each volunteer will receive an HIBT T-shirt and discounted parking for shift volunteers. Positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
HIBT event headquarters, retail and tournament control will once again be anchored at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, located adjacent to Kailua Pier.
